Match-making: a traditional comparison, without a fake score

OIOA compares two people’s birth profiles using nakshatra, Tara and rashi relationships from the Jain Jyotish tradition, and explains the result in plain words instead of reducing a marriage to a number.

Why families compare horoscopes

In many Indian families, before a marriage is discussed seriously, someone compares the two people’s birth charts. The practice has many names, such as kundli milan, guna milan, or porutham in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and many methods. The guide to traditional horoscope matching explains the best-known systems, including Ashtakoot’s 36 gunas and the South Indian poruthams.

OIOA’s match-making takes a deliberately careful approach. It uses the Jain Jyotish foundations already in the app, the birth nakshatra and rashi and their relationships, and presents the result as a reading to understand, not a score to obey.

What OIOA compares

From each person’s birth date, time and place, OIOA works out their birth signature: the janma nakshatra with its pada, and the rashi (Moon sign). It then compares the two people on:

  • Tara, counted from the first person to the second, and from the second to the first. Tara Bala is a traditional measure of how one nakshatra relates to another.
  • Rashi distance and pattern: whether the two Moon signs are the same, supportive, dynamic, stimulating or mixed.
  • Nakshatra-lord relationship: whether the planets ruling the two nakshatras are friendly, neutral or opposed.
  • Rashi-lord relationship: the same, for the planets ruling the two signs.

Surname and sex are never part of the calculation. They’re for identifying profiles only.

How the result is shown

You get an overall reading in one of four plain-language bands:

  • Strong support
  • Good compatibility
  • Balanced
  • Needs understanding

and a look at five relationship areas: mutual support, communication style, practical rhythm, emotional pace and decision rhythm, with the strongest area and an attention area called out. Each underlying factor, such as the Tara pattern or the lord relationships, is listed so you can see why.

There is no percentage. OIOA doesn’t show a probability or a “92% match”, because no such number can honestly be calculated. The app says so on screen.

No gates

Comparing profiles is unrestricted. Create as many profiles as you need and compare any two immediately, with no minimum profile count, no video to watch and no locked result. OIOA has no paid features.

Your data stays on your phone

Prediction profiles, with first name, birth date, birth time and birth place, are stored on your device only. The comparison runs on your phone and works offline. Profiles aren’t uploaded by sync and aren’t shared unless you choose share match result.

Birth details are personal data. Please add someone’s details only with their agreement, and for anyone under 18 only with a parent’s or guardian’s consent. See the privacy policy.

Using a reading wisely

  • It’s a tradition, not a verdict. A “needs understanding” reading doesn’t doom a relationship, and “strong support” doesn’t guarantee one.
  • Talk to people you trust. Families often consult an astrologer or elder who knows their own customs and considers factors an app cannot.
  • What matters most isn’t in a chart. Shared values, respect, communication, health and family support matter far more.

The disclaimer applies: readings are traditional astrological guidance, provided for cultural and personal interest.

How this differs from guna milan

Ashtakoot guna milan adds up points across eight categories to a maximum of 36. OIOA doesn’t produce a guna total. It uses the nakshatra-based relationships (Tara, rashi pattern and planetary lords) that also feed its daily prediction, and describes them in words. If your family follows Ashtakoot or porutham, use OIOA’s reading as a complement to, not a replacement for, the method you trust.

Common questions

How accurate does the birth time need to be?

The nakshatra and pada can change within a few hours, so a time within about an hour is helpful. If the birth time is unknown, the reading is less specific.

Can I compare more than one pair?

Yes. Tap compare another pair and choose any two saved profiles.

Why doesn’t OIOA show a percentage like other apps?

Because a precise-looking number would suggest a certainty that traditional astrology doesn’t offer. OIOA shows the traditional factors and a plain-language reading instead.

Is this the same in every community?

Match-making is available as a common tool. It follows the Jain Jyotish nakshatra method described here, whichever community you’ve chosen.

Key terms

  • Janma nakshatra: the nakshatra the Moon occupied at the moment of birth.
  • Pada: one of four quarters of a nakshatra, each 3°20′ wide.
  • Rashi: the Moon sign at birth, one of twelve signs of the sidereal zodiac.
  • Tara (Tara Bala): a traditional count from one person’s janma nakshatra to the other’s, grouped into nine taras such as Janma, Sampat, Vipat and Kshema, and read as supportive, mixed or calling for care.
  • Planetary lord: the planet traditionally said to rule a nakshatra or rashi. Friendship between the two people’s lords is read as supportive.
