1. Our principles
- Equal care. Every community in OIOA is presented with the same depth, the same visual weight and neutral language. No community is primary and none is “other”.
- Faithfulness. We aim to show each community’s calendar as that community keeps it.
- No ranking of traditions. Where traditions within a community differ, we describe each respectfully and offer options rather than choosing one as correct.
- Openness. We are open to adding any community that asks, and we welcome correction.
- Transparency. We say publicly what we’ve added and changed, on the roadmap.
2. What this policy covers
- Calendar and timing content: dates, tithis, nakshatras, prayer times, Roj and Mah, Nanakshahi dates, holidays and the methods behind them.
- Descriptions of communities, festivals, practices and terms, in the App and on the Website.
- Translations and names in every supported language.
- Requests to add a community, sect, method, calendar or language.
3. How to report
- Corrections and missing content: tell us what we missed.
- New communities, sects, methods or languages: request a community.
- Content you find offensive or disrespectful, or a legal complaint: grievance redressal.
A good report includes the location and date (for timings), what OIOA showed, what you expected, and a source.
4. How we review
Text version of this diagram
- You send a request: the community, what is missing, and a source if you have one.
- A person on the OIOA team reads it.
- We check sources, and ask community members where needed.
- We decide and tell you: added, corrected, or explained.
- The public roadmap is updated so everyone can see the outcome.
- Received. Every report is read by a person. If you left contact details and asked for a reply, we note it.
- Triage. We sort reports by type and urgency. Reports of offensive or disrespectful content are prioritised.
- Checking sources. We compare against published sources the community recognises: almanacs, jantris, mosque and committee timetables, sangh calendars, agiary calendars, SGPC and other jantris, government notifications, scholarly works. Where needed, we consult community members.
- Deciding. The outcome is one of: corrected, added, explained (no change needed, with reasons), under review, or not possible now (with reasons).
- Telling you. If you asked for a reply, we aim to respond within 15 days.
- Recording. Accepted additions and significant corrections are noted on the roadmap.
5. Timelines
| Type | Target |
|---|---|
| Offensive or disrespectful content | Reviewed, and removed or corrected if confirmed, as quickly as possible and in any case within the timelines on the grievance page |
| Factual errors in dates or timings | Reviewed within 15 days; fixed in the next practicable update |
| Translations | Reviewed within 15 days |
| New communities, sects, methods, languages | Acknowledged within 15 days; listed on the roadmap once reviewed; built when we can do so accurately |
6. Standards for content
- We use neutral, respectful language and the names communities use for themselves.
- We don’t publish exact future festival dates unless they come from verified data, because many depend on location, method or announcement.
- We don’t make claims of religious authority. OIOA describes and calculates; it doesn’t issue rulings.
- We avoid imagery that may offend, and we ask communities before using sacred symbols.
- We never invent features, statistics, testimonials or endorsements.
7. When practices are genuinely disputed
Some questions, such as how a lost tithi is observed, how a month begins, or which version of a calendar to follow, are matters on which sincere members of a community disagree. In those cases we:
- describe each position fairly, without judging between them;
- offer a choice in the App where we can; and
- encourage users to follow their own authority.
8. No retaliation
No one will be penalised for reporting an error or raising a concern in good faith.
9. Changes
We may update this policy. The version history below records changes.
