Why OIOA is different

There are plenty of calendar apps, family tree apps and group chats. OIOA brings together the things Indian families actually need, and builds each one around how Indian families live.

Six things OIOA does differently

We built OIOA after noticing the same gaps again and again. Here’s what’s different, and where to read more. We don’t claim no other app does any of these things. We have tried to do all of them well, together, for every community.

1. A family tree that speaks the language of Indian families

Most family tree apps were designed around Western records: exact dates, certificates, one researcher. Indian families remember differently. They know a father’s name, a birth tithi, the tithi on which a grandparent is remembered, or simply that an elder was “born before 1960”. OIOA’s Family Tree holds exactly those details, and lets relatives join and build it together, each linked as themselves, with invitations via WhatsApp.

2. Share contacts with the whole family in one go

Forwarding numbers one at a time is how most families still do it. In OIOA, a Family or Group keeps one contact list, and members who opt in get it in their phone’s own Contacts app, kept up to date. Changes and removals flow to everyone. OIOA never uploads your address book and never touches contacts it didn’t create. Read about shared contacts.

Text version of this diagram
  1. Anyone allowed to post adds a contact to the Family or Group list once.
  2. On SYNC, the list is shared with the entire Family or Group, or only with selected members.
  3. On each member’s phone, if they have turned on phone contact export, the entries appear in the phone’s own Contacts app and are kept up to date.

Edits replace the old entry. Entries removed from the list are removed from phones on the next sync. OIOA only touches entries it created and tagged itself; personal contacts are never read into the list, changed or deleted.

3. Events that ring for the whole family

A date posted in a chat group is easy to miss. A Family or Group event in OIOA rings as an alarm on each member’s phone, with Snooze and Dismiss, and can go to everyone or only selected members. Each person can mute alerts on their own phone. See Family and Groups.

4. Your community’s dates first, and offline

Most calendar apps need the internet and think in English dates. OIOA shows each month in your community’s own months, Hindu (by regional profile), Jain (by sect), Islamic (by method), Parsi or Nanakshahi, with the English date alongside. It calculates or stores them on your phone, so they work without a connection. Even your personal notes can repeat every year by tithi, Hijri, Roj/Mah or Nanakshahi date. See community calendars and offline calendars.

5. Cards for joy, and for loss

Card apps tend to stop at birthdays and festivals. OIOA’s card maker includes Shok Sandesh, Shradhanjali, Prayer Meeting, Jain Shok Sandesh, Muslim Funeral and Parsi Remembrance cards alongside wedding, birthday and festival cards, in 13 languages, with wording suited to each community.

6. Honest by design

  • No invented numbers. Match-making shows a traditional reading, not a fake percentage. Dates that a community hasn’t published yet show as “unavailable”, not guessed.
  • Private where it counts. Personal events, calendar notes, prediction profiles and calculator inputs stay on your phone. The Qibla screen asks for location only when you use it.
  • Local-first sharing. Shared changes are saved on your phone first and uploaded when you tap SYNC, and nothing is silently dropped. See OIOA-ID and sync.
  • Free. OIOA has no paid features. Optional rewarded videos unlock extra card backgrounds; nothing else is gated.

And the everyday tools, in one place

Alongside the family features, OIOA brings together tools families reach for every day:

all in English and 13 Indian languages.

For every community, equally

OIOA is a humble attempt to bring India’s communities under one roof. Every community has its own Home screen, built with the same care. Family features are the same for everyone, and a family that spans communities can share one tree, one contact list and one events list, while each person keeps their own calendar. See one family, many communities.

See it in real life

The use cases walk through real situations step by step: sharing the family phone list in one go, building a family tree together, planning a wedding, informing relatives after a loss and more.
