The situation
- A family on a yatra in the mountains wants to know when Rahu Kaal ends before starting the day’s drive.
- A traveller on a long train journey wants the Maghrib time for Iftar, and the Qibla direction.
- A Jain family at a tirth with no signal needs today’s Navkarshi and Chovihar times.
- An uncle at a village wedding wants to add the new relatives to the Family Tree while everyone is together.
These are exactly the moments when apps that depend on a server stop working.
How OIOA helps
OIOA calculates calendars and timings on your phone. Sunrise, the tithi, the nakshatra, Choghadiya, Hora, prayer times and the Qibla bearing are astronomy, and your phone can do it in an instant with your location or a city you choose and the date and time.
Text version of this diagram
- Your location, from the phone or a city you pick.
- The date and time, from the phone’s clock.
- Astronomical and calendar calculations, run on the phone.
- Today’s timings: panchang, prayer times and calendar days.
A network is used for things involving other people, such as groups and sharing, and for app updates.
Before you travel
- Open OIOA once while connected, so any published data your community uses, such as a Jain sect calendar or holiday list, is saved.
- Pick your destination city if you’d rather not use location. The built-in city list works offline.
- Allow notifications and alarms, so reminders ring on time.
While you’re away
- Hindu and Jain Home: the Today card shows sunrise and sunset, the Muhurat running now with time left, Hora, the nakshatra, Panchak and Rahu Kaal. See Choghadiya and Rahu Kaal.
- Islamic Home: prayer times including Sehri and Iftar, and Qibla, by current location once or a city from the list.
- Jain Home: Navkarshi, Porshi and Purimaddha, plus Choghadiya.
- Parsi and Sikh/Punjabi Home: Roj and Mah with the day’s meaning, Gahambars, Nanakshahi dates and Sangrand.
- Family: add people to the Family Tree or contacts to the Family. They’re saved on your phone and shared when you’re back online and tap SYNC. See OIOA-ID and sync.
Tips for accurate timings away from home
- Update your city when you arrive. Sunrise can differ by more than an hour across India on the same clock. See why sunrise times differ.
- Keep the phone’s time zone automatic, especially abroad.
- For Qibla, hold the phone level and away from metal, such as a train’s frame or a car dashboard.
What still needs a signal
Sharing changes with family or groups, downloading published calendar data and holiday lists, and app updates. Everything else is on your phone. See offline calendars.
