The situation
Every housing society has the same two problems. Important notices get buried in a busy chat group, so residents miss the water shutdown, the AGM or the lift maintenance. And the same contacts are asked for again and again: the plumber, the electrician, the carpenter, the security desk, the gas agency, the society office.
Community associations, residents’ welfare associations, alumni groups and school parents’ groups all face the same problems.
How OIOA helps
An OIOA Group set to only admins can post works as a calm, reliable notice board:
- Updates for notices, decisions and circulars.
- Events for meetings, maintenance work and celebrations, which ring as alarms on residents’ phones before they start.
- Shared contacts for services, with notes like “available 9 to 6, call before coming”. Residents can export them to their phone’s Contacts app, where they stay updated.
Step by step
- Create the Group and make committee members admins.
- Choose only admins can post. If you want, give individual residents permission to post later.
- Add service contacts: plumber, electrician, carpenter, security, society office, nearest clinic. Add notes on timings and languages spoken.
- Invite residents by OIOA-ID, or share an invitation via WhatsApp or email in the existing chat group.
- Post events: the AGM, water-tank cleaning, pest control, festival celebrations. Each one alerts residents’ phones.
- Keep it tidy. Edit contacts when a vendor changes, and the update reaches everyone’s phone on sync.
Celebrating every community’s festivals
Indian societies are often wonderfully mixed. One committee might organise Holi, Eid milan, Paryushan, Navroz, Gurpurab, Christmas and Onam in a single year. Members of an OIOA Group can each follow their own community’s calendar in the app, and the group calendar of events belongs to everyone. The festival pages explain what each festival marks, which helps when planning respectfully.
Moderation built in
- Everyone agrees to the Terms of Use and Community Guidelines before their first post.
- Offensive wording is stopped before it’s posted.
- Any member can report a post or a member, and admins review reports.
- Ownership can be transferred when the committee changes, so the group never loses its admins.
Privacy for residents
Residents’ own contacts are never read or uploaded. Only the service contacts the group adds are shared, and only members see them. When a resident moves out and leaves the group, the shared entries are removed from their phone on the next sync. See shared contacts.
Also useful for
- School parents’ groups: teachers’ and transport contacts, PTM and exam dates as events.
- Community associations: volunteer contacts, meeting events and announcements to selected members.
- Workplace teams: planning around holidays and long weekends.
